Your Artistic Talent as a Weapon
Your creative ability has power…
The enemy has no creative ability. Although Satan is a cunning adversary to the Kingdom of God, he has absolutely no ability to create. A master of destruction, he can only witness the creative gift in action from afar through the creative nature of God and His artists, whom He created in his image.
The enemy wants access to your talent.
Satan’s desire is to destroy God’s greatest creation, mankind. Satan recognizes the power of influence in the Arts. Since he has no creative ability himself, he seeks to influence artists, musicians, dancers, film makers, actors, etc. to use their God given talents for his purpose. He pursues access to our talents in order to use as a “weapon” that influences the thoughts, moods, feelings and ultimately, the choices and actions of people.
A weapon against your creative circle of influence.
The bible teaches us in John 10:10 that a thief comes to steal, kill and destroy:
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
To Steal
Satan, just like a thief, uses deception to gain access to our talent for his purposes without us even being aware of it. In many cases, he deceives the artist into thinking that he does not even exist, therefore, there is no threat to guard against. The artist may seem to thrive creatively, but may also produce work that is profane, obscene, and in many cases even demonic.
To Kill
John 10:10 makes us think of how Satan seeks to “kill” the artistic talent. By keeping the artist separated from God, Satan makes their talent ineffective in accomplishing God’s original plan for their creative ability.
To Destroy
Finally, Satan seeks to “destroy” your talent. Not to extinction, but to the point of being useless. Many with promising artistic ability never come into the knowledge that there is a call on their lives through the use of their talents. Although these artists may not use their talent to glorify the kingdom of darkness, they may never use their gift at all.
How do you to turn the “weapon” back on Satan?
James 4:7 says: “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
Resisting Satan, or going in the exact opposite direction that Satan wants you to go in, causes the devil to flee from you. Pursuing a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ allows your artistic ability to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit of God, rather than that of Satan. You will walk out creatively what God had in mind for you as His artist. This places the powerful tool that your creative talent is back in the hands of the one who designed it in the first place.

Interesting. I’ve always struggled with the concept of how I use my art for God without turning into a fluffy boring artist.
I know the feeling, Amanda!
This is a very deep lesson. Well spoken. I think as Christian Artist we are called to be a light in the middle of the darkness of this World. That does not mean that waht we do has to be “cheesy” or boring. rather, that is the challenge. To be a light. Something that “stands” out. Something everyone will turn their heads to look at. Something that will make an impact. The same effect as that of walking into a dark black room, and turning on the light. You can’t help but notice it’s there. So the direction of the Holyghost is essential, as you mentioned. Very well spoken.
this site really hit home with me, I left a “good” video editing job that I felt dealt with subject matter that was in opposition to my own values, and I wondered if I was the one with the problem or maybe “too sensitive.” I think your blog put it into the proper perspective, that I just wasn’t meant to be there, because it did nothing to further God’s plan or my creative ability. I found another job almost immediately, in graphic design…although not my dream job, at least it is decent work, sometimes creative and allows me time to think and plan about my role as a creative person. thanks
Absolutely. I have often been grieved by seeing an artist produce demonic artwork, knowing that Satan was using the artist to project this imagery into the world. I see a lot of it in the concept art industry. It’s very sad to me, because these artists are amazingly skilled and talented, but are having their abilities used to project imagery that the devil puts into the heads of many but can only publicize it by the hands of a select few. Fortunately, God always wins, and we will see people with equal talent produce things that the Lord gives to them.
Correction: “I have often been grieved by seeing an artist produce demonic artwork, unaware that Satan was using him/her to project that imagery into the world”.
What does the gospel say?
According to the gospel, the Cross of Christ is the greatest weapon a child of God has been given against such a battle (hence why we are to continuously bear it), because it is the progressive annihilation of “self.”
There is not one weapon in Satan’s deceptive arsenal that can attack a soul that has accepted God’s displeasure and judgment on “self” and all of its magnificent abilities, via the Cross of Christ.
If we would look to understand Paul’s words in Rom. 4:17, we would see that God awaits a life that would layed down its way and work, by faith in Christ, so that He might QUICKEN it with His life unto His work. Either we look to God, by faith, to make this a reality or Satan will always have our card and will always play it…because “self” is his God-given domain.
Remember: Satan’s greatest threat was never Jesus the Nazerene, but Jesus Christ, the resurrected Lord.
