In honor of the Resurrection season, I wanted to spotlight a digital painting I did a while back called “Savior”. Be sure to click the link to experience the interactive version and how it helps communicate what Christ did for us:
1. Concept/Inspiration:
I created this painting after deciding to do a digital painting completely within the computer from sketch finished piece.
After seeing so many images of a passive Jesus, I wanted to capture the strong side of Christ’s nature.
A strong and powerful defender, capable of fighting the battle against sin on our behalf.
I wanted this piece to speak to those that are fans of the art of video games, graphic novels, Japanese Manga and comics,
while also attracting the Sci-Fi fan. This audience may have never been attracted to the traditional portrayal of Jesus.
2. References:
I always keep an eye on machinery, protective gear and other items of the sort to help with any of my “mecha” type pics.
3. Sketches:
As you can see here, my thumbnail sketch’s for this painting included identifying the iconic elements I wanted to include in the illustration.
4. Color/Composition:
A blue background and color treatment was chosen to emphasis the sense of being trapped or cast away in a dungeon-like environment. This shade of blue also allowed for great contrast with the orange light-like features on Christ and the fellow soldiers.
5. An Interactive Touch:
The icons mentioned earlier would be carried over to the interactive version of the illustration where a user can get the meaning of the symbolism by mousing over each item or feature.
