Try This Time Travel Exercise: Part 2

time-travel

What seemed to be a somewhat corny exercise actually turned into a new and unique method of goal setting.

You may recall Part I of this project asked you to picture yourself at the age of eighty, then write a letter to your current self to reflect on great things in a long life.

The other part of the exercise had you to picture yourself at age eight and talk about what you like.

As promised, I followed this exercise myself and it was very eye opening and allowed me to list a few real goals.

Here’s what “Old Tony” and “Young Tony” wrote to “Present Day” Tony:

Let’s start with Eighty Year Old Me:

“Dear Tony-

You always knew that time would move fast, and your dedication to doing something everyday about a project or idea would pay off.

At the age of 50, allowing others to join us and take on some of the responsibilities of Art Lessons From God was one of the best decisions we ever made.

The organization really did take on a life of its own, and the impact that it’s made in the lives of individual artists never would have happened if it would have remained a “Lone Ranger” ministry.

I encourage you to continue to write your goals down like you’ve been doing, especially the goals that you KNOW you want to accomplish but don’t know where the money will come from. You’re going to find that those are the projects that will only launch with God’s help. That’s when you can be SURE that it’s His project, not yours.

Focus on the Live Events, and the podcasts. They will reach out to others, in a way you won’t believe (but will discover down the road)!

Publish the graphic novel. It will be the first of a number of them. You’ll find that these are the years that people need an escape. The graphic novels will provide that.

Continue to balance your time as you love your wife and daughters. It will make a lasting difference in the lives of each of them.”

And now here’s what Eight Year Old Tony wrote:

“Dear Me-

This is just to say when you are all grown up, don’t forget to have fun and do fun stuff.
I love comic books and want to make my own.

I like making stuff and I like going to the library and getting books about making things.

Lately I’ve been telling stories with a tape recorder. They are like movies and I call them Sound Stories.

All of this stuff is fun. Keep doing it because it is fun!

Bye for now.”

Tony Snipes,
Age 8 years old.

This is no different than visualizing where you’d like to see yourself goal-wise several years out. It also reminds you to hold on to the gifts and visions that God originally “wired” you with when you were young and believed all things were possible.

Try it yourself and share with us what thoughts, dreams and goals you uncovered:
