Whether you own one or not, you can now create custom designs or “skins” for the new IPad tablet.
GelaSkins Mobile Art allows you to create removable covers for protecting and customizing portable devices such as cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, gaming consoles and now the new IPad.
Why is this significant? Aside from it being another outlet for your creative expression personally, more importantly it also creates another revenue source for those of you who do art and design work for others. Think of the many people who are jumping on the band wagon to buy an IPad. How many of them (that are not designers themselves) could you help by creating a personlized version of their new toy for them?
Below is a 30 second video from the folks at Gelaskin to give you a better idea:

Hi Michele-
The way it works is you create the design then upload to the gelaskins website. On their website you have the freedom to play around and look at any of your designs on any of the devices they’re able to “skin”.
Once you like what you see, you add it to your shopping cart.
You can have a client pay you upfront (covering costs and a little for yourself)then order thru Gelaskins yourself.
Go to their site and play around with a few of your images saved on your computer. You can experiment all day without having to buy anything:

I think this is great, how can you get into something like this? Would gelaskins do it after you created the design? Or do you gave the job too them??
Michele
Hey, JC!
If I hear you correctly, you’re asking if you could sell something like this to your clients meaning the Gelaskins (or Skinit) “service” itself?
I was more so thinking that you, the designer, would use Gelaskins internally and provide the final product to your client.
I could see something like this being a great way to complement the traditional services designers already provide. A great way to stay on a former client’s radar:
*You did their logo 6 months ago.
*Now, a quick “hello” to show them (especially with a sample) how that logo could look on their laptops, phones, IPad, etc.
*Even if they don’t buy, you had a cool way to circle back to say “keep me in mind for the next project” and with something that makes them go “Wow! You guys can do that?”
TS-
great article, TS.
This is a really cool idea but I wonder how many people are actually using services like this and skinit.com
I wonder what the age demo is for this product and who their ideal customer is.
I love the concept but could I sell something like in my business to my clients that only use Macs and they want their brand on it or is this just a fad? Just my thoughts.
Thanks again…JC
