How do you stare right at an open door and still fail to go through it? There are probably more than these two, but if you really want to miss fulfilling your creative purpose, there are two sure-fire ways to do it:
1. Fail to come out of your comfort zone.
A perfect example of this one can be seen when you look at students in school. When kids return to school to the next grade level, the curriculum is designed to usher them into new experiences and challenges they’ve never faced before.
Failure to engage these new challenges means that the student will not progress to the next level, a level of intended growth and maturity.
What creative project or challenge is still waiting for you to step out of the comfort of familiarity and master it? It’s usually something you’ve thought about and pondered for quite some time, but have yet to take it on because it asks more of you than the normal, “safe” project.
2. Failure to connect with others.
A few years back, my pastor said that we will not fulfill our purpose alone. It will involve connecting with others somehow. I did not immediately consider that statement applicable to my purpose as an artist because I had been such a “lone ranger” artist for so long.
Yet, to my surprise, I have seen in retrospect that my most successful creative projects (such as Angels Among Us and this very blog) could not have existed without connecting with others.
Who has God been showing you that may be the key to fulfilling the next purpose filled design or art related project?
What other things would you say are definite ways to fail at fulfilling your creative purpose?

@Jeremy-
My first hunch is that it’s the specific arts discipline. I’d expect visual artists to have more passion about other visual arts projects and performance artists to have more passion about performance art events/projects as well. Not to say they have no interest in the other discipline. I’d expect you’d see more of your dance ministry friends coming out to your mime related initiatives.
What’s also helped me is to have a regular place where relationships can be built, and for me that’s been the website. The artists that I can count on for support hear from me at least once a week online, making it easier to bond offline.
I’m going to be quite honest and transparent right now. I have had much trouble with fellow artist. It seems as if other artist dont want to network, connect, and work togather, at least this has been my experience. I have supported other artist in their venues and projects on multiple occassions, but I cant get support from these same artist when I need support. I travel many miles to help other artist on their album releases, business grand openings, financial support, etc…but I was disappointed when I started my school and only a few artist responded to help. I try to connect with others but I feel alone at times. I dont know if it is my area of art(Mime & Theatre, or that they are really busy. Advise please?
The way to fail at fulfilling your purpose for the Lord is to assume He called me because of what I was able to do for Him.
That’s insane and that’s why the enemy tormented me in my mind.
I fell into a depression.
I thought God was waiting for me to get my act together and I was holding up progress.
Then He introduced to a word and reality called…grace.
Through grace, I’m learning to receive more.
The New Covenant is based upon us accepting God’s ability, not working His will through my ability.
I’m still learning.
Victoria:
Your responses blew me away because those situations are so REAL!
Thanks for always being willing to share.
a. Focusing on the details of distractions instead of focusing on what God has set before you to do.
b. Not sure of what direction the Lord is leading you into, or lacking the confidence in God that He knows what is best for your life and work than you do.
c. Lacking the training needed to accomplish what God has been telling you to do for years. Instead of getting the training and practice you need during theyears you’re waiting for what God is going to show you what He wants to do we just wait for that moment then when it comes we are not prepared.
d. Not knowing how to order our days to be able to accomplish what God has given us to do because of so many other pressing demands that all seem equally important and of great value. This area is one I have the most difficulty in deciding or figuring out and causes me the most anxiety. If I don’t do one I feel I’m not doing what God wants me to do and if I do that one then I feel the same that I am not doing what God wants me to do. I have difficulty decerning which is the one that God wants me to work on 1st, then 2nd and 3rd. Eats a lot of the time I could be doing something in either one. I guess it is partly indecision and not knowing for use which direction is truly what God is telling me to do at any particular time.
These plus yours are all areas I have my own failings of fulfilling the creative purposes God has given me.
Great question!
