Don’t you just love when God allows a plan to come together? Some of you may recall when ART SLAM was just an idea. Now we’re working on our 3rd event and we’re a part of a course being taught at a local college. Thanks to sponsors ArtOfDevin.com and  The Imagine Center, check out the Artist Statements of the artists and ALFG subscribers that will be on stage LIVE for ART SLAM:

ALLISON HALL: Tattoo Artist (Vet! Winner of ART SLAM 2011 Spring)

1. Describe your art in one sentence: My art is typically colorful, bold, meaningful, spiritual and intended to inspire.

2. What inspires you? I am often inspired by other artist’s work in various mediums. I am continuously
inspired by the ever-present voice of the ultimate creator, God.

3. How do you keep yourself creative? In my profession, tattooing, your only option (if you want to be successful) is to be creative. Every day is a new challenge.

4. Survival Instincts: You’re stranded a thousand miles from home in a small town with nothing but your favorite art supplies. What would you do over 30 days to make it back home? It depends on the place where I am stranded. Tropical island? Assuming that I would WANT to go home, I suppose that I would “set up shop” and tattoo until I made enough money to buy a plane, bus or boat ride home. In the words of the great Don Ed Hardy, “tattoo the world”.

DANIELLE SORRELLS: Painter-Designer

1. Describe your art in one sentence: Right brain meets left brain.

2. What inspires you? I get inspired by surrounding myself with other creative people. Creativity breeds creativity.

3. How do you keep yourself creative? I dedicated a space in my home as a studio so I have somewhere work whenever the feeling hits me. I love to do all kinds of art so I’m always starting a new project or trying a new medium. I love to do something that I’ve never done before.

4. Survival Instincts: You’re stranded a thousand miles from home in a
small town with nothing but your favorite art supplies. What would you do
over 30 days to make it back home? In all honesty, Id probably spend the first couple of days sleeping and trying to come up with a game plan. Then I would spend a few days getting to know the town and what its “style” is. I would spend some time trying to make connections and network with local townspeople and local shops. I would try to create something that was practical, yet creative that would be easy to make and quick to sell. I’d then attempt to sell enough of my creations to purchase a bus ticket and make my way back home.

4. Survival Instincts: You’re stranded a thousand miles from home in a
small town with nothing but your favorite art supplies. What would you do
over 30 days to make it back home? My favorite art supplies are simply paper and pencil. Now, assuming I want to get found, I would design the nature around me more than the paper, in inspiration of togetherness and opening ones heart; that alone should attract others through the grace of love and God. In the meantime, I would use my wilderness survival skills from boyscouts (I’m an eagle scout. I’m a huge fan of making, carving, and painting things I can use in the wilderness like bows or staffs) and making/playing an RPG game to pass the time.

SIERRA D’AMATO: Mixed Media

1. Describe your art in one sentence: My art varies in style from realistic drawings to Art Nouveau inspired mixed media works, but one quality that can be found in all of my works is a hint of surrealism
or fantasy.

2. What inspires you? Stories inspire me: mythology, folklore, stories that unfold in everyday life, and
the stories behind people I meet. My art often references fairy tales and myths that
are familiar to everyone, but sometimes I invent my own characters and allow the
viewer to fill in the narrative.

3. How do you keep yourself creative? I constantly view art, whether in galleries, in books, or online. To stay creative, I have to get out of my head sometimes and take on a different perspective. The best
way to do this is to view the work of other artists and let their ideas challenge
and inspire me.

4. Survival Instincts: You’re stranded a thousand miles from home in a
small town with nothing but your favorite art supplies. What would you do
over 30 days to make it back home? I would become a street artist, drawing portraits and caricatures to earn money for
food and shelter. I would also take commissions for more expensive portraits until I earned enough money to buy a plane ticket.
