Two weeks ago I asked many of you what you thought the biggest threat to creative people today was.
You shared a lot of answers that are real and relevant:
- Opportunity/time to engage in their creative activities.
- Lack of confidence.
- Lack of goo communication skills
- And more!
Here’s what I REALLY believe is the biggest threat to creative people today:
And not just ANY distraction…but distraction by the artistic work of other creatives!
Here’s an example of what I mean:
Like many of you, I LOVE movies, especially those that stimulate my creativity! Be it Sci-Fi, fantasy, or anything that speaks to my creative nature.
The same is true for my favorite TV shows.
And a trip to the bookstore, be it my friend Rob Young’s comic shop or the local Barnes and Noble…I can spend a good hour soaking up the creativity dripping from the covers and pages!
HERE’S THE PROBLEM:
I’ll spend so much time getting inspired…but fail to do anything with it.
If you’re like me, I’ll spend so much time getting inspired…but fail to do anything with it. I’ll FEEL as if I’ve been doing something creative, but will have nothing to show for it.
The irony is you allow cool projects and creative inspiration to be put on hold because you are spending time with the cool projects and creative inspiration of other people THAT WERE PRODUCTIVE and finished what THEY started!
Have YOU found yourself in this scenario? What do you find as an effective way to counter this paradox? Post a Comment.
