Q: “I’ll tell ya, I subscribe to this because although I do create visual art as a hobby, I make my living as a performing artist. I am often criticized and discouraged by those people who do not share my vision. What tips would you offer someone in regards to keeping confidence in who they are in Christ, and letting the comments of those who do not share a vision roll off your back?”

A: Great question, John, and you may be surprised, but not an uncommon scenario.
What I’ve come to learn is this:
Your gift is designed to be a blessing to others…but not everyone will share your vision or even respect it. The key is to focus on those that ARE drawn to the vision and those that find value in what God has positioned you to do. A friend of mine reminded me some time ago that we are called to walk as Jesus walked, but He was also criticized when He walked in His purpose!

Q: “I was wondering if you had any advice for creating a comic book. I am currently beginning the process and it seems more complicated than I realized.”
- Steven S.

A: Steven, this is another great question. I thought I’d get feedback from a few ALFG subscribers that have had the most immediate experience in creating comics, especially on a professional level, and let them share their advice:

Eric Mereced says this:
“Well, you are right about one thing, it IS complicated. That’s the part many beginners do not realize. Creating a comic book takes a lot of time, effort and energy. When we’re sitting in our chairs at an early age dreaming of one day becoming the next Jim Lee or the next Todd Mcfarlane, it’s all good and dreamy but we don’t see the struggles an Artist has to go through to create a comic. With that said, should you give up because it’s complicated? Not at all. As a matter of fact, I highly encourage you to continue and finish what you start, trust me, you’ll feel a lot better that you did.

The important thing here is to pace yourself. Don’t try to do everything all in one day. Set a schedule for yourself. Today, Monday, I will work on the layouts for a few pages. Tuesday, I will work on penciling a page. Wednesday, another page, and so on. Keep to your schedule, don’t over work yourself and above all, HAVE FUN.”

Artist Xero a.k.a. Matthew Ebisch says this:
“Well, my advice is learn how to draw, then learn how to ink, then learn how to color, then learn how to letter. While learning those skills, also learn how to write. Then, maybe you are ready to make a comic, but don’t ever expect it to be easy. Yet, if it’s a story you NEED to tell you’ll strive to overcome the complications no matter what.”

Mel Rivera shares the following:
“I do agree with what’s been said. It’s hard work and very complicated to do your own creator comic. So many avenues to go down on this question. For instance, does he have an original story that translates well into the comic book medium?
Will he be doing all the work or with partners? Does he understand that producing one book is not the goal but several books? Will he be doing this as part-time or full time? A good test for him would be to first do an ashcan version (very inexpensively produced book) and give it away to see if he has the talent and market to produce a higher end book and hopefully more books. He could also take the ashcan version to Cons and show artists and producers and get their feed back.
If he wants to continue he can do the free web comic model and reach a wider audience and build a following, which he could use as a resume later on.

Recommendations from Mel:
Books: “To produce ‘comic book’ books all you need is a good basic foundational lessons.”

Websites: “Well, FB page ‘A Brotherhood of Comic Artists’, for sure LOL! Find a site that he likes and emulate (not copy). Another site with good info http://webcomicsguide.com/ some good info here but there’s so much actually too much to list

And Caleb Rivera says this:
“Plot line… story…pencils..inks.. colors..bubbles..lettering..sizing your pages to the required comic book standard. What could be complicated about this? If you have a team to do the work! If not, the only complication you will face is dead lines. There’s no need to create extra anxiety by placing those dead lines, just be patient. Let the work play it self out and with dedication and passion you will see the work pan out .Assuming that you have a story to work with!”
